Take the Time to Do It Right

We recently received some great news, that a kitchen we designed in Mendham had just won an award in the national Kitchen & Bath Business design competition (see photo).  The reason that this kitchen is a winner is that our design made the most of an awkward room configuration and it is chock full of unique details.  A kitchen like this does not come easily or quickly, in fact, this kitchen took a full 6 months of design and planning, from the time our client walked in our showroom until they were signing off on the cabinetry order.

Our most satisfied clients are those that did not focus on doing their kitchen to meet a tight deadline, but doing it right so that it will be enjoyed for many years to come.  The absolute minimum you should allow yourselves to design your kitchen is 6 weeks.  Our average is about 3 months for the planning and design process, but it can take much longer.  Here’s a few reasons why good design takes time:

  • Adding in interesting and creative details like coffered or beamed ceiling, wainscot paneling, banquette seating for eat-in kitchen, brick accent walls, custom industrial hood or lighting, or sliding barn doors.  The trend now is to incorporate these kinds of architectural details to add interest to an otherwise simple and clean kitchen design.
  • Dealing with difficult structural and room layout issues, like a load bearing post in the middle of your island, or awkward room configuration, may require extra time for planning, engineered drawings and permits.
  • Revising the plan numerous times before we have the final, very detailed, design.  You can really help reduce the number of revisions by giving your designer the budget you want to stay within and appliance selections up front.
  • Making your finish selections early in the process so that the entire room is planned out, the budget is firmed up and the whole design really comes together. These include items such as backsplash tile, light fixtures, flooring, hardware, countertops, and plumbing fixtures.

Why rush to have just an ordinary kitchen when you can take the time to have fun and create an award winner!
